Hazel and Frank live in 1794, long before the civil war and the fight for slave freedom.
Frank: family moved from Canada to Virgina, so that they can own slaves and a plantation.
Hazel: family has been slaves for several generations, and is determined to be the last.
Both of them are on opposite sides of the social pyramid but they both have one thing in common; slavery to them is wrong and they are determined to tell others that. And they want to show that color doesn't matter, that blacks have feelings, and that love can be given to anyone.
