Raised in the hidden cove of Nualolo Kai, far from familial strife, Kealohilani lived a life of wonder. The only child of Ho'omana, Chief of Manā's western village, and his wife Lilina, she grew up exploring the cliffs of Nāpali, swimming with her sea animal friends, and learning the ways of her people under the watchful eyes of her father, his loyal guards and her mother's ladies in waiting.

But when tragedy strikes, Kealohilani's world is shattered, and the young chiefess is thrust into a future she never imagined. No longer shielded by her family's refuge, she must decide: will she rise with courage to face the challenges ahead, or falter beneath the weight of loss?

A tale of resilience, kuleana, mo'okuauhau, and the call of destiny, KAMAILE invites you on a journey through the beauty and trials of old Hawai'i-where every choice can shape the fate of a chiefess and her people.

Cass has no memories of her parents, only impossible dreams of waves and orcas and, sometimes, her mother's voice. When she and her adopted aunt return to the Pacific Northwest island--where her parents died twelve years before--Cass hopes the place will trigger long-buried memories. Instead, she discovers that the impossible is real, and that history is about to repeat itself. Unless she can stop it. ***Teaser*** The water hit with such a shock of cold that Cass thought she was going to pedal up and out of it again like some cartoon character. Instead, she flailed and splashed and smashed one arm against a piling as salt water poured into her raincoat & filled her shoes. "How do you like it?" Jason yelled. She spun until she could make out his form, black against gray sky. "What?" she sputtered. She dragged one arm from the water long enough to shove wet hair from her face. Jason became clearer: black hair dark above his yellow raincoat, arms crossed over his chest. "What the hell are you talking about?" "I asked how you like it, going for a swim in this water." She was open-mouthed with disbelief. It was a bad idea; a surge lifted her and slapped salt water into her mouth. Bile burned her throat as she coughed and all the while she was still flailing at the water, fighting the drag of shoes and clothes to keep afloat. She should kick them off-that's what you were supposed to do if you fell into the ocean with your clothes on-but she was only a dozen feet from the dock. Besides, it was her only coat. Jason watched her the way she'd watch a barracuda. "I know you're following me." "Following you?" What. The. Hell. She gave a mighty kick and tossed her coat onto the dock. Jason just stood there. "I nearly drowned last week, you know that? Now you show up as if nothing happened." "Last week," Cass said slowly, "I was in Argentina." Whatever he'd seen, it wasn't her.

Anela Fuller has always been a little different and a little weird. Found as a toddler alone and unconscious on the lava fields of Maui with no memory as to who she was, strange occurrences have always followed her: hearing people's thoughts and manipulating their actions, moving objects without touching them, and hearing voices from an ocean that terrifies her. The only clue she has about her identity is a broken bronze medallion that has so far refused to give up its secrets. Adopted by the hospital nurse who cared for her gave her, she grew up with the semblance of a normal life even if the school bully and her own resentful adoptive sister never let her forget that she wasn't. The day Anela left for school on the mainland was the happiest day of her life. Now 34, Anela has returned home to Lahaina for her mother's funeral. The second her plane touched down at Kahului airport all her strange abilities that had been dormant came roaring back with a vengeance. Her sister blames Anela for the great tragedy in her life, and her young niece suspects Anela may be more than just her auntie. Anela can't wait to leave Maui behind for good. That's when a mysterious young man shows up at her doorstep with the missing piece to her medallion and the answer to all of her life's questions: she is a mermaid. The idea that Anela is a sea creature straight out of ancient mythology seems ludicrous to her until an accident at sea reveals her mermaid tail for the very first time. Knowing the truth isn't the same as gaining comfort from that knowledge, especially when that knowledge conflicts with her human upbringing. As she struggles to understand her aquatic heritage and master her abilities under the young man's frustrating tutelage, dark forces rise from the ocean depths intent on shaping Anela's future for themselves and obtaining her now-reunited medallion that could give them dominance over the entire world and not just its oceans.
