My original escape plan had hinged on tricking a guard, and I had picked River on first sight. Until I realized who he was to me.

I never wanted a mate, never wanted to have to rely on another that way, but I've found that I haven't been given much of a choice. On my own, bouncing from one group of evil men to another since the moment I was able to leave the wretched woman who raised me- a curse on her name- I never expected to find my mate while imprisoned for the only crime I didn't commit, in a land not my own, and with my bear bound and gagged.

I never expected to find my mate in fierce, flirtatious, gorgeous River. Kind and gracious with a sweet heart and a habit of wearing pretty things that had my bear sitting up and taking notice, River was made for me, and I for him.

He was also the man whose sole responsibility it was to guard my cell and keep me from escaping.

I've fallen in love too many times, and had my heart broken just as often. But this time, with Griffin, the man who swears he's innocent of trying to harm the Emperor, but guilty of every other crime I can think of, I feel... safe. Safe and loved and cared for. Since learning of wild mages and their mates, I've had a desire to have that kind of love. That devotion and pure need that I've seen in the eyes of the men around me.

I thought I was safe with him, as his mate, but his betrayal...

I'm not sure I'll survive this heartbreak. I'm not sure I'll be able to move past the soul-tearing, heart-rending realization that nothing is as I thought it was. That maybe, as much as I love him, Griffin never saw me as more than the man who held the keys to his cage.
