Percy was in a hard place in life his friends were dealing with their own problems. Annabeth had broken off the relationship saying they needed space. He decided to do something and joined the Army. He came out and couldn't find a way to live without action. So he made a name for himself by becoming an assassin. This just leads to more action. Just the thing he wanted.
