"That one afternoon, I kissed you. In the middle of the street, where a white truck zoomed past our connected lips. And boy, it caused problems we couldn't have seen, but wasn't it also amazing?"

                                                                •••

Three years have passed, in the year of 1947, Paislee Miller lives a life of barely getting by with her bills paid and food on her table. Her little sisters seem to be the only source of happiness in her heart. After World War ll captured Deen, her forbidden, emerald-eyed boyfriend and love of her life, she had to adjust to life without it being so bright. Everything crumbled between her fingers when he left and Paislee still wonders how she could clean up the mess her past made.

Just as the anniversary of Deen's departure comes rolling around, Paislee is surprised when she opens the door to the person she thought she would never see in the flesh again. Over the years, a lot has changed but some things just seemed as if time had paused. Especially the fiery chemistry between the two past lovers.

The racism and hate still finds housing in the biased laws of Mississippi, but can Paislee and Deen's relationship survive the new world? This time, they're all grown up.

The ear wrenching screams heard from dark alleys, the glares from men as you walked into "their" diner, going through the back doors at movie theaters, or standing on the bus after a day's long of work. This was all nothing to Paislee Miller, for she was your typical colored girl in the eye of the beholder. Living in Jackson all her life had brought her many things that she wouldn't trade in the world, even the constant racism and hate that flowed through the city's air. That is until she meets Deen Rivera. He was nothing far from perfect if you asked, and everything grand. As Deen and Paislee cross paths many times she starts realizing that her solid heart was starting to open up for this green-eyed, winsome country boy. As for Deen, well he fell in love the minute he casted an eye to her. After that, he couldn't stop seeing her, touching her, loving her. Everything she once cherished slipped away in the blink of an eye. After a mugging gone wrong, Hannah is left with brain damage. Years later, she's still trying to come to terms with the fact that her old life is one she'll never get back. Not her ability to write out a sentence or read a good book. Not the strength she once had to run a marathon or her ability to speak without stumbling over the words. The woman she was is gone forever and Hannah is forced to live with constant reminders surrounding her day to day life. Desperate for change, Hannah takes her former best friend from high school up on an offer to move in with her across the country and start a new life. It's the second scariest thing she's ever gone through, but Hannah knows the only chance of living her life is to give up trying to fix the old one that she'll never truly be able to mend. When she arrives, however, Hannah immediately realizes she's made a terrible mistake. This part of the city doesn't fit someone like her and she's ready to turn around before her bags are even out of the car. Until she meets Meggie's boss. David is southern, muscular and, according to Meggie, a grade A prick. But the brooding bar owner seems to have a soft spot for Hannah and is determined to show her that the choice she made to move here wasn't the wrong one and will do whatever it takes to get her to stay. Her second chance at life is becoming more than she imagined and as Hannah gets to know David, she begins to wonder if that second chance at life comes with a second chance at love.
