Laurens is arranging an engagement so he can propose to Hamilton. The secrecy combined with Hamilton's paranoia leads into thinking that Laurens is cheating on him. Essentially evolving into a fight and a, later on, break up. Their reunion is prompted by their friends filling in the gaps for Hamilton.

(I know that Laurens is the one that's 3 years older, but John sounds cute as a shy kid. I also know this is probably crappy, and ive changed some details, such as Lafayette being three years older than Laurens instead of three years younger, and ive made relations between characters that aren't real.
