Voldemort took power swiftly and mercilessly, ruling over the wizarding world with an iron fist. The Ministry was overthrown. Rebellions were crushed. Lives became dark. In 1971, 11-year-old Sirius Black prepared himself to attend Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry, although it was very different from the school his parents had attended. Since the Dark Lord's take over ten years before, Hogwarts had become a school where only the purest magical blood was accepted. You would find no muggle-borns and hardly any half-bloods for most of these children were either killed, captured or in hiding.

Hogwarts now was a place for dark magic. The dungeons were full of muggles, creatures and half-breeds which the students practised their curses and dark magic upon. The castle was as much a prison and strategic base as it was a school, the prisoners interrogated and tortured on a daily basis.

As part of the noble House of Black, Sirius was expected to be as dark as one could be. But all his life he knew he was different. He couldn't hate muggles as he knew he was supposed to. He couldn't loathe the creatures he was meant to put down. He couldn't find it in his heart to torture half-breeds who he thought were just as human as he was.

So when Sirius befriended a young werewolf by the name of Remus Lupin locked in the dungeons at Hogwarts, suddenly everything changed.
