After the last war, when humanity was nearly wiped out, the new countries decided to abandon their bomb technology in an effort to preserve the world. The promise of peace left room for a better way of life. As it seemed to Kalli, everything worked out smoothly for everyone-except herself. She had been counting down the days until her eighteenth birthday, when her country would evaluate her usefulness and decide what she would do for the rest of her life, since she could remember. Being the only sick person in an entire community meant she had to work ten times harder. When she hears a rumor that she might never even get the chance to prove herself, she finds herself digging up some ugly truths about what is really going on beyond her city's fence-line.
