Many species have been wiped out due to war, petty conflict and the craving for power. Greed. Some species are sold for their look and abilities. Many are sold on the black market, some are now common household items. Just as witches and wizards have become.
Those who can weild magic go into hiding. Many are captured and abused. Their powers used for personal gain. Power. Healing. Wealth. Even for pleasure. Everything has a price. Even ones life.
