A Cinderella tale from the old west

Emeleth watched as the cowboy walked across the dance floor approaching her. Her emotions were mixed. She was elated he had taken her to the dance. He excited her too she had to admit. He had said he would come and take her to the dance. Her heart had responded just to his presence and keeping of his promise. "Relax Em," she whispered to herself, "slow deep breaths...there that's better." But how did she really feel, her feeling were quite mixed. On one hand she absolutely hated the man at times with an intensity that surprised her when he said stupid things which he was apparently good at. Yet she found him attractive, amusing at times and even exciting. She realized that he had found her attractive and she liked that too. He had said as much. Perhaps if he kept his mouth shut she mused. "Yes," whispered to her self, "don't talk cowboy. I'll just look at you and smile." David spotted her standing with her sister and the pastors wife and smiled at her as he approached. "Why did he have to smile?" Emeleth thought and she felt her heart race and her face flush.
"I believe this dance is mine Em," David said.
"Em doesn't dance," Amanda said and Phoebe nodded in agreement.
"But she will with me," David said again smiling as he offered her his arm, "come Cinderella you were born to dance." Emeleth took his arm and followed.

The land they crossed was beautiful, the land was not flat but sloped into valleys and hills peppered with trees that gave shade and small streams, as they moved Sam spoke to him about the dry season, details of the land and where water could be found, and anything she thought would interest the man. Running out of things to say she turned to him and asked, " any questions?" " not regarding the land, would you mind answering a few personal ones?" Bryan asked Sam shook her head, "yes, I mind, I don't particularly like it, no offense." "None taken, just curious to know why you want to be mistaken for a boy." Sam reigned in her horse, and waited until he did the same. She pulled one leg out of the stirrup and placed it over the horn where she rested her elbow on her knee and placed her face on her hand, "think about this," she said nudging her horse so that she almost touched the man, "would we be riding here, like this, alone, if I looked like Cecile? All grace and delicacy?" Sam's eyebrows rose and an impish smile spread on her face as she watched Bryan's face change as her words sunk, and he pulled back. I wrote this story in the nineties, for my mother who was an avid romance reader and Barbara Cartland follower, she had been diagnosed with lung cancer and there wasn't much to do. Since we lived far apart I wrote this and other stories to entertain her and show my love. She was a brave woman who ventured from her motherland, Germany and married a man from Peru which language she did not even speak. I based most of my stories in her circumstances of not fitting in, she went to a country where she knew no one, and there she stayed for the love of one man.

I shifted uncomfortably in my seat as he stared across the table at me. I could seriously drown in his eyes. He was intoxicatingly attractive and he had to know it. That's why he was acting strange around me. For some reason, he looked at me as if I was the only one there with him. As if nobody else were here. And his voice... it pained me. It actually pained me with how utterly seductive and husky it always sounded. And the way he smelled all the time. I don't know why he smelled so strong, but I didn't mind. He smelled like evergreens and a hint of mint. It sounds like a bad combo, but it dizzied me with how lost I got in it. The thought of not being able to control myself, my thoughts and feelings and body when I'm around him, infuriated me. I was so good at holding myself together now, and he just unraveled me so easily, leaving me a mess. I wasn't the slightest bit afraid of him, and I had no idea why either. Just being in the same room, I felt like I didn't have to look over my shoulder. I didn't have to worry. I didn't even know who he was, and he still drew me in. "So, you were in California before? Why did you move?" Grace Hatfield asked, looking at him. She is our school's college and career advisor. She took me in and adopted me a couple years ago. She even gave me her last name. A saving grace. Why had she invited him here? Why did he come? He turned to her with a smile and a shrug. "Guess I just hadn't found what I was looking for yet." Something about the way he said it, sent a shiver down my spine. Why did I feel like there was so much more meaning behind his words than he was letting on? "Well, I hope you find what you're looking for." Grace said, and he turned to me with a devilish smirk and a mischievous glint in his eyes. "Something tells me that I will."

He gave me a feline smile as he stalked toward me. I backed away until my heels hit the stall wall and he took advantage of my surprise by stepping in to me, his body a mere whisper from mine. "That's good, Evelyn," he murmured and brushed a strand of hair behind my ear. My heart was pounding and I knew my face was betraying everything I was feeling. Damn him. I didn't want to feel this excited clench in my stomach. I didn't want to feel this longing for him. "What are you doing?" My voice was shakier than I would've hoped and far too breathy. "Something I've wanted to do for a very long time." *************************************************** Two hundred years after a powerful sorceress eliminated all modern technology and most of Earth's population, the people left behind live happily with no electricity, no motorized machinery - no advanced technology of any kind. However, many of them now possess magical gifts that were once considered myth. Evelyn Kentala, a talented horse trainer, is an empath and uses her gift to understand animals. Her abilities don't allow her to know the emotions of people - or so she thinks. When Broderick Ryan, the next leader of his and Evelyn's province, returns home after being gone for five years, Evelyn discovers she's much more than an empathic horse trainer. Frightening and rare abilities begin to manifest and she's left reeling when she discovers why. Evelyn and Broderick find themselves drawn to each other as they discover the secrets of her unknown past and fight to keep themselves, and their province, safe from those who wish them harm.
