Aro, Marcus & Caius are all mates. They felt like something or someone was missing. Years later, they met Jasper after his time with Maria and they knew he was their fourth mate. Knowing there was still that feeling of the unknown mate. Due to Peters's gift, they decide to mess with the Cullens. So reluctantly they sent Jasper away. The Cullens who treated him so wrongly, unknowingly put themselves in internment doom.
After Alice came back to Forks. She drags Bella and her "cousin" to Voltaire. And sacrifices her for their lives. Not knowing that their lives were forfeit.
