Marin is the everyday girl in the everyday world in the everyday country of America. She had no idea she was born for much more than for snappy comebacks, helping the principal think of horrible punishments and being an annoying little sister. She was made to be an Ilam, the creature the old prophecies say would one day show their faces to mankind. Ilams were the most powerful creatures out there- but the test for the Ilams is far more dangerous than what Marin is used to.
Taylor and his father are still recovering from the mysterious death of Paige, Taylor's younger, enthusiastic sister. Her traumatic death only leads into more mysteries and Taylor realizes he is in more danger than he thought- he would go through what his sister did but might have a fighting chance to stay alive.
The clock is ticking and a year will go by faster than what Marin and Taylor can imagine as they, 2 strangers, fight for each other's lives- and their own.
