O livro reúne três narrativas sobre uma questão central, que poderia ser definida como "a condição feminina", numa sociedade ainda dominada pelos homens.
A essa altura o leitor pode estar achando que tem nas mãos uma tese sociológica disfarçada de ficção. Nada disso. O grande mérito de A Mulher Desiludida é conseguir superar os pressupostos ideológicos da escritora e criar, a partir daí, grande literatura.
Na primeira narrativa, a mais autobiográfica, vemos um casal de intelectuais maduros, ambos de esquerda, em conflito com as posições cada vez mais conservadoras do filho, Philippe. O conto prenuncia não só as reflexões posteriores de Beauvoir sobre a velhice, mas também o confronto de gerações que explodiu em maio de 68.
O segundo quadro deste tríptico é o monólogo angustiado de Murielle, que, depois de dois casamentos fracassados e do suicídio da filha, rumina em solidão o seu ódio pelo mundo e por um Deus que talvez não exista.
Na última história, a mais longa, acompanhamos o irreversível desabamento da vida familiar de Monique, uma típica dona-de-casa que de repente se vê abandonada pelo marido e desprezada pelas filhas.
