Ellium was a beautiful land, historically famed for its favor among the Gods going back further than any living being could remember. As such a place, Ellium was home to the most powerful of mortals, those bestowed gifts by the very gods worshiped across the lands. In every generation there were rulers of this land, both equally blessed in different ways by the heavens. One ruler would be blessed by the dark and one by the light. Together they would balance each other and their kingdom as no one else could. These soulmates, standing side by side, controlled the mortal fates of all within Ellium. However, these two people could only rule so long as they did so together. Each family was blessed with one child to inherit the powers of both parents and as the powers of both the purest good and purest evil flowed through their veins for the first time like liquid lightning, one would prevail over their very soul. At this point, a soulmate would traditionally be chosen by the gods to rule alongside the royal child. This magic imbued and entrusted to the Kings and Queens of Ellium was as old as the gods themselves and was not given lightly. As such, these two people were subject to the rules and desires of the Gods from the very first moment life flowed through their veins until the last of the magic of existence bled from their mortal bodies. At the birth of every Deus Mortale, mortal god, there was a royal ceremony wherein the child was placed at the altar of the gods and was assessed and chosen as a favored one by one of the gods or goddesses. Once chosen, this babe was given two gifts by the god or goddess. These gifts would follow the child throughout childhood until such time as they received their parents' life forces on the stone altar of the gods. At which time, the prevailing gift would be determined by the side of existence chosen by the soul of the new ruler. It is here where we begin this particular story, the one about The Last Light of Ellium.
