As a last resort resulting from the Crystal Gem incident, every era 2 gem was implemented with a type of disease, need they ever be destroyed. This disease slowly killed the gem off if they were to ever fall in love, since love was deemed as a distraction. Unless it was mutual, they would certainly shatter over time.

As time went on, Peridot fell in love with Lapis. Little did she know, love can be a dangerous thing.
