Kobieta Minsi is a Polish girl in Scranton, Pennsylvania. She lives amongst her family and they dread the fear of getting arrested everyday. Despite not being full-blown communists, they are still to be targeted, and they live everday feeling as if it's their last. Kobieta and her brothers Ivan and Aleksy live with their aunt and uncle on the outskirts of Scranton after their parents perished in Poland; they're all Polish immigrants. They live discriminated against everyone else for who they are.
This leads Kobieta to make many unlikely friends in her journey, later destined for love.
However, Kobieta's world falls apart shortly after when another person she loves dearly dies. In the midst of the lost and struggling to stay safe from the authorites, something happens.
Casey Henry is the new schoolteacher from Philadelphia. She is fresh out of university and stepping in since the town's previous teacher fell too ill to teach. She is excited to travel far for the first time, finally leaving behind a world she'd rather just forget.
