At the annual tribe gathering, the Sha'Shan sees his fighting skill and decides to take him on as a spy.

Cristina is apprenticed to Steph, one of the first female Rangers. They are sent to the Middle Kingdoms, with James, the first foreign Ranger (born in the Middle Kingdoms), and Ant, an old, grizzled Ranger soon to retire.
