Rylie Kirklen is starting her sophomore year of high school. As she does every August, she buys a new journal to record her life, this year choosing a beautiful book, bound in red leather and filled with 300 cream-colored pages. And she begins to write. Like every other year, she records her thoughts about friends, classes, and crushes. She writes about her cross country injury, and about the power going out one night and never coming back on. And she writes about burying her best friend's mother in the backyard, and about smashing an intruder's skull with a crystal apple, and about wishing that her parents, who have been missing for weeks, would finally come home. She writes about all of the exciting things teenagers keep in their journals while the world is going to hell. Be warned! Menace lurks in the pages of Rylie's journal as her world descends into darkness, and you never know what may be waiting just around the corner after the sun goes down.
