Imperial Children Book 1
They tell us not to be afraid of the glassy borders that surround the darkest corners of our world. Most people are born normal and afraid, always running and hiding from the shadows of the creatures that chase them. Hominids, as the average citizen is categorized, live a typical life. There are the few, however, whose lives are decided for them when they are children. Magen are warriors who, from the time they take the placement exams (DMAE's), are expected to serve and protect their Imperium with their lives. Sinistren are always prowling around behind the recesses of borders. Their only desire is to rip you to shreds and feast on the pieces that remain. It is the job of Magen to travel into sectors and kill as many of these creatures as possible.
Amara Fridel, a fifteen year old girl who grew up scrounging for whatever she could; an orphan. She's been to hell and back and has no time for games when her very life is dependent on whether or not she'll have enough to eat. She lives on the edge of one of these borders, the screeches of the creatures on the other side being her only lullaby at night.
When a strange man shows up claiming that she needs to come with him, she is skeptical and writes him off as a creep. That is until the border next to her home fails causing Sinistren to destroy everything in their path as they pour into the defensless town of Briar. When she is given no choice but to follow him, she finds herself in a whole new world she's never seen before. A world of exceptionally gifted children who work under the support of the Imperium Government, and she's one of them. But everything is becoming unbalanced and the borders that keep Sinistren separated from the general population are slowly failing, one at a time. No one can explain it, no one can stop it. Amara has to work harder than anyone else to catch up to the people who have been learning about their own abilities since birth. But will it be enough?
