Hello to all! This is my entry to the amazing Freshman 15s Contest, titled A Poisoned Pear.

When speaking of Johannes Skathi, the words lazy, worthless, and pay the damn rent get thrown around with alarming frequency. After flunking out of magical school, and punching out the guy down at the wizard’s employment office, Johan has ended up in a dead-end job as a rogue-hunter, hunting down all those who’ve broken magical law. Normally, the cases he takes on are small-time criminals; scam artists and petty thieves. But this isn’t a normal case.
A powerful magical artifact has gone missing, leaving a trail of blood in its wake. After casting an unpopular vote, one of the members of the ruling Council is found dead in his home, with his ring stolen and his apprentice missing. Johan is sent down to bring the missing apprentice back, at any cost. But as secrets are revealed, and Johan is caught up in games of political intrigue and magical battle, he must decide who, if anyone, it is safe to trust. Johannes Skathi was sent in to hunt a murderer, but with the stakes increasing, he must ask himself; is he the hunter, or the hunted?All Rights Reserved

She looked at all of them with hopeful eyes. No one belived her. Except Him ! She didn't expect him to believe her out of all the people. She had expected some vile remarks and insults which she was used to. But life is cruel in wicked ways. It shows you the most beautiful things at the worst possible time and with the worst possible scenarios. "Your wife is going to be the unluckiest, I swear. God bless her already. Because she is going to need all the blessing she could get, to have her sanity after being married to a vain, controlling, conceited and..... and... a jerk like you." She was looking for words to describe him but had settled for 'jerk' in the end. Little did she know , that those words were going to bite her in the rare when she finds herself married to a man , she thought she hated his guts. The funny part was, she choose to get married to him and a small part of her was glad that it was him , instead of her harasser. Join Haya as she finds herself being rescued by the man she hated and who she thought hated her back. But there are things that doesn't meet the eyes. That we hide in our heart. And there were alot of secrets hidden in his heart. Things that either could destroy everything he had worked for or could bring him the peace and forever that he was looking for !! Most likely. *** Lindsay Hughes, a sophomore studying cultural anthropology at Tillamook College in Oregon, has been good at discovering patterns, lies, hidden details, and just about everything else for as long as she can remember. To her, it's no secret that she's an underachieving disappointment to her parents, she'll probably never find a job if she even graduates, and her spending habits will haunt her eventually, but she also couldn't care less about those minor issues. Did you forget what we had.." the words got strangled in his throat and a loud noise took place in the room making a pin drop silence which shocked the daylights of Murad as he never expected the timid, extrovert and bubbly girl to strike him hard, across the face. "You were a mistake and you'll always be one! I was so blind in your trap which you called 'love' to not see a cold blooded brute." Hazaan gritted out the words not knowing what the outcome of her honesty would cost her. Fury and rage was all he felt towards her. He jerked off his grip on her and pushed Hazaan to the wall harshly, making her yelp as her head started throbbing in pain. Murad wrapped his fingers on her throat and pressed his fingers more firmly which caused her to squirm in his hold for the oxygen. His next words were not for which Hazaan was prepared for. "You are mine Hazaan! YOU.ARE.MINE. If I can't have you then no one can..." were the last words heard by her before everything went black.

In JOS I set the rogue and con-artist Harric against a foil of warriors in a land threatened by magic and civil war. Whenever possible I turn familiar tropes on their heads: instead of a handsome young Lancelot, I cast a broken-down ex-champion addicted to pain-killing herbs; instead of a dashing Squire Brian, the old knight reluctantly takes an ambitious young woman as squire. Similarly, I re-imagine the standard medieval milieu by infusing aspects of two of my favorite historical periods, Elizabethan England, and The American Frontier. Both eras boast a kind of nationalistic arrogance that borders on hubris, and a magnificent spirit of resourcefulness and re-invention that is fun to play with.
