Hello to all! This is my entry to the amazing Freshman 15s Contest, titled A Poisoned Pear.
When speaking of Johannes Skathi, the words lazy, worthless, and pay the damn rent get thrown around with alarming frequency. After flunking out of magical school, and punching out the guy down at the wizard’s employment office, Johan has ended up in a dead-end job as a rogue-hunter, hunting down all those who’ve broken magical law. Normally, the cases he takes on are small-time criminals; scam artists and petty thieves. But this isn’t a normal case.
A powerful magical artifact has gone missing, leaving a trail of blood in its wake. After casting an unpopular vote, one of the members of the ruling Council is found dead in his home, with his ring stolen and his apprentice missing. Johan is sent down to bring the missing apprentice back, at any cost. But as secrets are revealed, and Johan is caught up in games of political intrigue and magical battle, he must decide who, if anyone, it is safe to trust. Johannes Skathi was sent in to hunt a murderer, but with the stakes increasing, he must ask himself; is he the hunter, or the hunted?

In JOS I set the rogue and con-artist Harric against a foil of warriors in a land threatened by magic and civil war. Whenever possible I turn familiar tropes on their heads: instead of a handsome young Lancelot, I cast a broken-down ex-champion addicted to pain-killing herbs; instead of a dashing Squire Brian, the old knight reluctantly takes an ambitious young woman as squire. Similarly, I re-imagine the standard medieval milieu by infusing aspects of two of my favorite historical periods, Elizabethan England, and The American Frontier. Both eras boast a kind of nationalistic arrogance that borders on hubris, and a magnificent spirit of resourcefulness and re-invention that is fun to play with. SERIES The Jack of Souls is first in a series. I am posting parts of the sequel here now (The Knave of Souls), to help me refine the story.Complete

"why the fuck did you go on a date with him? he is not even your type!!" he growls. "so what? he is friendly and nice to me" I replied confidently. "NO, HE IS NOT NICE!!! he wants you because you're....beautiful" he said looking directly in my eyes! "Viaan! stop being so annoying...and let me go! he is waiting for me" I said. As I was about to leave, he held my hands and in a millisecond I was pinned to his car. I was shocked by this action of his. He never behaved like this but today he was in different mood. "What a-are you d-doing?" I said. We were so close that our lips were almost touching and then he bends towards my neck and kiss it. I swear that feeling was so amazing... I loved it but I didn't show it on my face, but then he looked at me with his dark brown eyes, and stared at me for a couple of seconds. "If you didn't leave for home right now! I will kiss the fuck out of you, until you become breathless" he said in his deep voice without breaking the eye contact. Honestly that was hot....but this is not the time for this. "And why are you suddenly so interested in my personal life? Are you jealous of Abhay?" I said without looking at him. "Do not try me! I said go home!!" I sensed that he is angry. "Oh yeah? don't try you? what will you do Mr. Raghuvanshi?" I said in a sarcastic way. To which he smirked. and said "don't ask for something you can't handle baby" What did he just say.....Baby? "I'm not your baby". "Are you sure?" he smirked again. Why the hell he's keep doing that. ......... Meet Kyle and Kate, two 15 year old students who have a gift for thinking fast, quick, and smart. Oh, and meet the other 18 kids in their class. Some call them genius, some call them annoying. PART 1 The year starts off bad enough, that is, with earthquakes and snowstorms. And finally, when things starts to clear up, the first murder occurs. Right in front of their eyes. It seemed obvious who did it, but as the murderer wrote her confession, a completely different murder occurs across town. Shocked, the police rush over to gather the evidence and clues, but before they even assemble their evidence, the police are led to another death. One by one, deaths occur around town, faster than the police can count. There's not much in common with all of the murders, only the fact that all of the victims come from one class. In the course on one year, the class of 18 shrinks drastically. PART 2 As summer vacation begins, the remains of the class split. Five students tell their stories of meeting new people, near death experiences, and funny incidences. PART 3 More than what meets the eye happened in the course of the summer. The class comes back to a new year, utterly shocked to find that 4 new students have joined their class. Everything starts out alright, but people are getting frantic. The government sent in spies to watch the class for suspicious behavior, two of them students themselves. Two other students are hired to try to figure things out on their own. What nobody realizes however, is what's important. As the year goes on, some of the students realize: -A secret passageway may not be limited to only the house. -The school has a basement -Falling down a flight of stairs can save lives A supposedly dead student wakes up from a coma, people start realizing things, all leading to the final, seemingly unimportant clue, that closed the gap from arresting the wrong person, to finding the real murderer.Complete
