This is a very off-to-the-side, side-story of my main WIP, 'The Puzzle'. It helped me flesh out my main antagonists backstory and I felt it was good enough to post for feedback.
Edit*- I've revamped a few pieces here and there and introduced all the 'main' characters for now. I will be going back and changing things as I get a better feel for how the story should progress.
Thank you.

1 part Complete
This is a significantly altered version of H. P. Lovecraft's horror story "The Alchemist." The original was written in 1908, and so is, as of 2020, well within the public domain. The text was taken in 2020 from this URL: https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/The_Alchemist_(Lovecraft) and modified by Wil Wroge (another pseudonym of Thomas Iota) as a response to a writing challenge issued by claytemplemedia.com I always enjoyed "The Alchemist" but did not consider it critically until Clay Temple Media made it the focus of one of their episodes of The Elder Sign podcast. Among other valid criticisms, the hosts suggested that Antoine, the protagonist, lacked agency, the supporting character Pierre was unsympathetic and illogical, and the antagonist was too easily overcome. So, I accepted this as a writing challenge. I've replaced Pierre with Agace (whom I hope is more sympathetic), given Antoine a much broader character arc, and made the antagonist, setting, and overall tone noticeably darker. I kept as much of the original text as possible, but I altered many sequences and added content freely in hopes of expanding the original enough to give the characters more interaction. I did my best to mimic the density of Lovecraft's diction and style in plot and setting revelations, but attempted also to add some of my own action and suspense into the climax. A warning to parents: there is significantly more violence in this story than in Lovecraft's original. The cover is an image from the public domain, taken from the book "Old and New London" by Walter Thornbury published circa 1887.

I recommend reading the first two parts before this! After only two weeks into the anthro takeover, things have gone right and wrong on both sides. Emma, Cody, Eric, and many more human and engine survivors have fought to escape to a safe haven within the Biltmore estate and village in North Carolina. However, with tension between new and old faces slowly arising, everyone will inevitably have to face the war in order to survive, or at least make it out while staying themselves, physically and mentally. Meanwhile, on the opposite side, June and her friends and family just fighting to stay alive slowly begin to realize they're more important than they think. As not long after, they're forced back into battle to help continue their part in bringing about the end of the human race. However, many don't realize at first that they have more in common than they think. All they know is that many of those they've been acquainted with will likely make it out alive or as themselves. Now it's up to them to partner with their new and old friends and equate one another as allies against powerful forces in order to protect themselves, and all they ever cared about before it's too late. I recommend you be 13 years or older to read this story. ALSO, DO NOT STEAL ANY OF THE OC CHARACTERS (but I do confess that there are some characters that I don't own and I'd like to apologize to those owners that I didn't credit you all😬). Damsel Knight

11 parts Complete

Sometimes the best knight is a damsel. In a world where women are seen as weak, defenceless creatures for men to protect and own, one orphan girl wants to be different. She dreams of being a knight. Slaying dragons, taking down armies with her father's sword. Only her foster parents don't agree with her views. On the night of her betrothal to a man over twice her age, the King's soldiers come to their tiny village, and in the chaotic aftermath she's left with a choice. Go back to life she knows and marry a man she despises. Or journey onward and risk death to earn the knighthood she dreams of. The road forward isn't a safe one for a girl travelling with only her foster brother as company. Magic lurks in dark places. Vengeance burrows deep in many equally dark hearts. And all around the circle armies are gathering to defend the Kingdom against a threat not seen for a thousand years. This is the first part of the 140 thousand word fantasy adventure.
