In a world where magic is on the rise, it is every citizen's duty to avoid it spreading to neighboring cities and countries. To remedy the situation, the government creates the 'buddy' system in which teens, who are more prone to carrying 'the curse', are snatched from their homes, moved to the Center and matched to a complete stranger. It is their duty to supervise this stranger, make sure they carry no symptoms and exterminate them if they are discovered to be a potential threat.
The best part? Since they're total strangers, no feelings are involved. That is, of course, until Sadie meets Deuce. The more time she spends with him, the more she becomes attached, but she can't ignore the growing suspicion that he may be cursed.
When the Center is put on lock down after being attacked, Sadie is faced with an age-old dilemma: is it wrong to take one life to save another? She has limited time to make a choice because at the end of the day, Sadie knows it's either kill or be killed.
