Alaric Saltzman is the owner of the cafe in the Mystic Falls,who lives with his beautiful wife Josette Saltzman, and a free-spirited and outspoken daughter, Josie Saltzman. Half of the Mystic Falls is infatuated by Josie but she considers them unsuitable for her. Rebellious Josie has several tricks up her sleeve, to avoid living the grown-up life and dodging marriage.
The twist in the tale comes when Alaric rents out his rooftop room to Penelope Park, a 24-year-old girl who aspires to be a writer. Penelope moved to Mystic Falls with her best friend, Hope Mikaelson, both of whom have limited resources to bank on. To make their ends meet, she ends up working in Alarici's cafe as an barista. Since Alaric is principally determined to not rent his (room on Rooftop) to bachelors, Penelope fakes about being married and disguises Hope, as a woman posing as her wife. However, Josie figures out what is going on and takes an instant liking of Penelope's mild and innocent behavior.
