Viggo, an Estere orphan from the planet of Holdor, was just a young boy when the Sovereign Planets enlisted him to the Intergalactic Federation Academy. After thirty-six seasons as a Federation Soldier, Viggo is captain of his own vessel, the Daveer, but wants nothing more than to cut ties with the government that stole his childhood and continues to lie to its people. Zajra, born on Sheol, is what the Estere call Halvt. Mixed blood. Her mother, half Loron, found her fate intertwined with Zajra's Estere father. After burning down the North Wing of the Academy in Skahean, Zajra was taken in by the Intergalactic Federation Academy because she showed linguistic promise. Loyal to the Federation and the Sovereign Planets after they took her in when no one else would, Zajra hates the Estere in her blood and will do anything to keep from following her father's traitorous footsteps. Yet, Viggo's past remains a mystery to him. One that the Federation and Sovereign Planets Council have long been hiding. With a new outbreak of a lethal drug called Incendium, the truth threatens to catch fire. Viggo finds himself on the other side of a line he never thought he would cross, and despite everything, Zajra finds herself ready to do anything to help him.

In the near future, humans have colonized Mars, joined pirates in space, and divided Earth into two vastly different nations: The United Empires and Liansa. When a mission to Mars goes awry, Ailee Chambers---a Sergeant in Earth's Interstellar Force---is left for dead in a spaceship with no life support, and an alien contraption wrapped around her neck. She is rescued, but there's no cause for celebration, because her saviors are pirates, disgusting monsters who kill Martians and Earthers for sport. Yet, when the Captain of the pirates' ship, Felix Oringo, enlists her help to unravel the plans of Boss---the leader of all pirates---Ailee begins sympathizing with her snarky captor. Boss claims he will liberate Liansans from their dictatorship, but Ailee remains unconvinced. After all, what do men in power want? More power. However, in her quest to unveil the leader's plans, the irresistible Boss falls for her, complicating her relationship with Felix, her loyalty to the United Empires, and matters of the heart. For the first time in history, Mars and Earth combine forces to eliminate Boss and retrieve Ailee---why is she so important?---and it's a toss up as to who makes it out alive. * * * Ranking: #5 in femmefatale
