Unwanted Positions

“Last Wednesday morning, King Friedrich passed away,” Johann announced. “And his will was read out that night. It stated that the Crown Prince and the granddaughter of a certain Mr. Charles Stevens would be married.”

My eyes popped out.

“Excuse me? This can’t be true!”

“I’m afraid it is, Ms. Jessica. You are the granddaughter of Mr. Stevens, correct?” Wilhelm answered.

“Yes, but—this is the twenty-first centaury, you can’t be serious!”

“We would never joke about something this serious,” Johann told me in a flat tone. “You are the future Crown Princess, and we will be at your service.”
