Anastasia Nikolaevna Romanova is the fourth child of the Russian Tsar Nicholas. But at 16, she has few privileges past those of other girls her age. Her family is apathetic to her emotions, with the exception of her older sister Maria. Alexei, the crown prince, lives in constant fear of bleeding to death, as hemophilia takes the last male heir to the Romanov dynasty.

Meanwhile, the Bolsheviks have been gaining power, and their secret soldiers are posted everywhere in Moscow. Too many young men are drafted into this secret army, offered only the alternative of death. Things reach a boiling point when the royal family is put under house arrest by the Bolshevik Cheka.
