Catalinas mom died when she was young. Her and her mom were very close. When her mom died her dad became very violent. When Catalina was younger, before her mother died, they all moved to a small town from their home in Nicaragua. Catalina had to leave her old school because saw her bruises from when her dad would beat her. She would soon be starting a new school, but she didn't expect her whole life to change. She didn't expect to find out a secret that her parents were keeping. She wasn't expecting to find him.

Catalina has a dream of her mother the night before her birthday. She always did. Although this time her mother was very serious and the dream felt shorter than usual. Her mother gave her a message. She didn't think much of it until the next night. On the night of her 17th birthday she shifted for the first time.
