The Dark Ages is a period of time almost forgotten to man. It may be recorded in facts and statistics, logbooks and diaries, but the fear that swept the globe has been completely eradicated from the memory of civilisation. 

Pitch Black, the Boogeyman, the Nightmare King, ruled supreme during this time, spreading paranoia and sowing doubt into the minds of humans. Everyone upon the surface of the earth lived in a constant state of pure terror. 

But then the Man in the Moon created the Guardians, the light that brought an end to Pitch's cold, cruel rule. Their gifts of wonder, hope and suchlike were the miracle weapon that helped mankind fight back against the fear.

Or at least, that is the simplified version of it.

You see, the Man in the Moon did not exactly get it right on the first try.

His nightmares had abandoned him and were turned into daydreams by the Sandman himself. Pitch barely had enough energy to create a small nightmare before it would dissappear. Everyone thought he was gone for good, everyone ALWAYS thinks they've truly gotten rid of fear. So when Pitch felt a huge spike of fear and darkness, he followed it to the source.
