Sans has always wanted a dog, someone to play and have fun with.
When Sans and Frisk get in a fight while dating Frisk runs away and Sans can't find her.
When Sans meets an abandoned, unowned dog, he decides to take it in, but with how much it reminds him of Frisk he asks Toriel to make him a thin sweater for the dog that matches Frisk's purple and blue striped shirt.
