Earth, as they all know it, wasn't made to last forever. Humanity has reached is tipping on the end of what they thought would be eternity. Everybody assumed they had time to fix it all, but what was done cannot be reversed. They've fallen too far into the abyss of their own mistakes.
That's where the idea of space exploration mixed with crazed young adults comes in. They're emotional, they're traumatized, and they're definitely not qualified to save humanity.
