Lila and Zooey become instant friends when Lila moves to the small beach town of Borne for the start of her freshman year of high school. The girls immediately get each other - knowing what the other is thinking with just a simple look. Even as high school delivers several challenging experiences for both of them, the girls remain determined to never let the setbacks and hardships affect their relationship with each other. 
But when Lila's boyfriend Michael dies tragically at the end of their senior year, those separate places the girls end up in leave Lila remaining in Borne while Zooey heads off for college in Chicago. Not only are the two separate from each other geographically, but through hidden secrets both have vowed to keep from each other about the terrible night of Michael's death.
Five years later, Zooey returns to Borne after finishing school and the girls find themselves once again brought together in the very place that led to them pulling apart. Will they finally reveal what they both have kept hidden for so many years, or will the fear of losing each other permanently be enough to keep their secrets buried for good?
