There's a brick road that runs through the forest, connecting the towns to the capital city. It's a well-beaten path, anyone who stays on the path will be safe from the hungry creatures of the woods, it's enchanted. Anyone who wanders off the brick will surely die.
Rose has travelled through the forest many times before; its not uncommon to hear the screams of villagers while walking. People who got too comfortable; who thought a shiny rock next to the edge was 'too pretty' not to pick up; who thought it would 'make a good story'; who only wanted to help the poor fellow's screams they could hear in the distance. Rose has survived so long because she knows the key to survival- do not, no matter what, walk off the brick pathway.
What she doesn't know are the eyes watching her. Eyes in the trees and hands in the bushes. Creatures who wait for Rose to succumb. Creatures who wait for a queen. Creatures who know what Rose doesn't. There is a man in the woods.
