It's been roughly ten years since the spread of the infection was suppressed, thanks to the help of outside powers. The world is a poorer, rougher, stranger place: mandatory armed populations; shooting a zombie, more popularly known as a maniac, on the way to work is a part of life; anti-maniac training starting in childhood; and special armed divisions of the government specifically designed for enforcing laws surrounding undead encounters. For Al McDermot and his friends, growing up in this time is even harder, as they discover the virus the world supposedly had a handle on has mutated, unleashing a whole new, more dire and advanced threat. Old worries and conflicts come back to the surface in Al's hometown of Toronto and in the rest of North America, against the backdrop of an entire world in conflict. Separated from her father, a young girl has to learn to survive in a foreign land haunted by tribes of ghosts and roving bands of piratical thralls to a sadistic King. A watcher keeps lonely vigil from within a fortress that has been under siege for hundreds of years, while a soldier dies for the twenty-third time, and dies again while wondering if he is going mad. First started in 2015, this story is at 50k+ words, but was removed when a plotting hiccup was encountered. I now intend to split it into three parts, and this is the complete Part 1.
