In a world full of lies, the truth comes a few far in between.
Alex Kline has lived in Baymeadow, Fairdela for nearly five years now and is a vigilante. Doing work that heroes on their pedestal don't wish to do, Alex could be considered a hero. Except they don't wish to be. Most heroes are known and could be anybody walking down the street. Alex wishes to stay in the shadows and work at their job and just be able to keep up with their rent. But when their identity is revealed to the world through an anonymous sender in the news, Alex freezes for the first time in many years and doesn't know what to do. When the most notorious villain in Baymeadow sends them a letter to meet with her and gives them an offer to fix all of this, Alex doesn't quite turn it down. But when the two stumble upon something they cannot not continue to dig up, well, let's just say they have a ways to keep digging.

In a world of superpowered beings, it's natural some become heroes to try and better the world such as Scarlett the Bold, Janice the shield, Mary the healer, and the one everyone fawns over: Stardust. As cheesy as it is to say, "With great power comes with great responsibility." So they formed the hero's guild under the name: Justice. To keep not only themselves in check but any future heroes who come to take up the mantle of preserving peace and justice. And then there's you; No powers, no great feats of achievement. Shortlisted for the Open Novella Contest 2019 • Being a Supervillain is tough. Between managing a secret lair and making sure your mom doesn't stop loving you because you keep telling everyone she's dead, it's a really hard business to be good at? Add to that, the fact that somehow you got arrested because your cat sitter didn't take the day off and then you go around expressing your unconditional love for pancakes in a Super holding cell because technically they can't put you in a proper prison and you don't really have a choice because lawyers are expensive? And then, you realise your best friend is plotting go take over your spot as the greatest villain there ever was? Okay, maybe not the greatest, but you do come pretty close to it! To top it off, there's that one Superhero who's just so completely gorgeous, you couldn't imagine any harm coming to them? Because they're just that precious? I guess that makes me a Supervillain with minor time travel superpowers and a huge crush on a not so powerful Superhero? And all you have to do is protect yourself and everyone you love from your ex best friend/sidekick --because let's face it that's the highest level of praise for a wretched traitor here--and you also have to get out of Super Holding somehow? Long ago a group of superheroes and villains worked together to prevent an invasion. But they managed to kill more people than they saved. I've been lucky enough that I don't have powers that attract too much attention --- Everything was going great. Everything was normal. Until Jamie was forced to confront the reality of her situation. The mayor who has been running the NSA was beginning to take drastic measures. Sending many supers off to another island. Stealing their powers. Forcing others to betray their own kind. The dark powered must be stopped or else the poor and innocent light powered be forced under a reign of Terror. That's what it looks like from a normal point of view, but is it all true? We never know because we never really hear the Villain's story. There are many bad people out there but is it destiny and fate that keeps some behind bars and others in the comfort of their homes? "I've tried telling them I'm only fifteen. That no sane government would force a boy my age to fight crime. 'But Max, you're a superhero! Isn't this what you want?' Actually, no. I just kind of want to get through high school. Then we'll talk about this 'superhero' business." Max Owens is your average high school sophomore. Well, he tries to be, at least. At fifteen, he's got more important things to do than fight the infamous Vinicus Cauldwell. With his single mother having recently lost her job, Max is determined to help his family get back up on its feet. The publicity and pressure that comes with being a superhero would be too much to handle right now. But it's hard to fly under the radar, when you can literally fly. Meanwhile, Vinicus Cauldwell enjoys the power he has as Murkbourne's most feared super-villain. For once, he can sit back and relax without being pestered by the police. That is, until Max arrives. Vinicus isn't happy about having to fight a child, but he can't let Max find out. After all, super-villains can't be "good people"... Can they? We can't all be born heroes.
