Liv has lived out her entire memory in the ruins of the Presidio in future San Francisco. She's better off than most- her Pa and Mer are members of the elite Piir, the dictators of most continental North America. As Liv grows up in a world deprived of color, music, expression, and freedom, she learns to rebel in small ways: kissing a girl on her first day of Secondary- the best school in San Francisco, reinventing the city's last library, and stumbling unknowingly into the underground world of artists. Liv's rebellions grow, and before she can stop and think, the entirety of the city is in flames. In a bitter world, Liv must question everything in order to survive. In the end, who will rise from the ashes?

But after a few years, Geoff starts suffering a mid-death crisis. What's the purpose of going through the motions as a skeleton if you can't really live? Then he gets word that his cat, Bernie, just died and he can collect him and bring him home! Geoff and Naomi hurry to get Bernie only to discover that, due to a clerical error, their cat has been lost.
