Valencia, España. A principios de la década de 1990 una serie de misteriosos asesinatos empiezan a sucederse por toda la ciudad. La policía se muestra incapaz de detenerlos, y la prensa empieza a bautizarlos como los crímenes del ajedrez, pues junto a cada cuerpo aparece una pieza de ese juego.

Las víctimas no parecen tener nada en común, y los asesinatos nunca siguen el mismo patrón. Parece que cada uno de los habitantes de esa ciudad puede ser la nueva víctima. El subinspector Robles, de la sección de homicidios, se ve inmerso en la investigación cuando una de esas víctimas es encontrada muerta en la zona de su comisaría. 

Campeón nacional infantil de ajedrez, la alargada sombra de esas piezas parece que vuelve a caer sobre sus espaldas, otorgándole más responsabilidades de las que está acostumbrado.
