Mari has been a scavenger for almost three years. Travelling and selling all alone, she is a collector and vendor of a dying treasure - books.

When Mari arrives in a small town near the Texas-Arkansas border, she meets the engaging and exciting Cadmus, who begs to join her in travelling the decimated Midwest with her trailer of books. Mari has been isolated for so long and likes it that way, but Cadmus is different. Despite her misgivings, she invites him to travel and scavenge with her.
