Almost fifty years after the catastrophes which nearly eliminated the human race, America's remaining population struggles to survive in a world without power, industry, or organization... a new dark ages. To meet the demand for products not readily available, scavengers venture into the cities and neighborhoods left from the last age to find items to resell. Mari has been a scavenger for almost three years. Travelling and selling all alone, she is a collector and vendor of a dying treasure - books.
When Mari arrives in a small town near the Texas-Arkansas border, she meets the engaging and exciting Cadmus, who begs to join her in travelling the decimated Midwest with her trailer of books. Mari has been isolated for so long and likes it that way, but Cadmus is different. Despite her misgivings, she invites him to travel and scavenge with her.
The adventures, fights, and perils that Mari and Cadmus face will change them both forever, but if they can learn to hold on to each other, they may find something worth living for in a bleak and hostile world.
