Little did they know that evolution and the elements had conspired together to bend and twist Humanity's DNA and create a broad range of mutant offspring.  And they will stay unaware, if Mordecai and the Lone Gunmen have anything to say about it, Humanity's mutant children hiding in the shadows of the Dark Edge.  But the powerful mutant psionic now faces a new enemy, one that not only wants out of the shadows, but to destroy Humanity at the same time.  Wielding all the powers of the psionic people, can Mordecai stop this new enemy before Humanity itself is destroyed?

The humans who landed on the little planet had nearly lost all hope until they stumbled upon unknown ancient ruins beneath the planet's surface where they discovered untold amounts of bizarre advanced technology. Earth and humanity were saved, and the little planet to thank for their salvation was named Umbra. Alice is a xenoarchaeologist, her passion in life has always been the study of ancient cultures, and now she has the opportunity to study the most ancient one of them all. The very one that modern Human civilization is now built on. Alice and her boyfriend accepted a posting on the famous and ancient ship, the U.S.S.A Umbra.
