The defenders were created to protect Guardians, humans, and countries from dark chaotic forces. But after The Incident they began to fall apart, each blaming the other for what happened. The one good thing about The Incident was that it caused their worst enemies to go underground for decades. But when one defender is found murdered and their enemies turn out to be much stronger than they could have imagined, a chain of events is set off that forces the defenders to turn to the one person they fear more than any enemy they've encountered.

Turning humans is a dangerous process for both the humans and vampires. The vampires hired scientists to create a synthetic venom to turn humans into vampires.
