A folksy love story about the moon.
I wrote this short story for my partner. She has a tattoo of a crescent moon on her arm. It is inspired by her, folk tales with an embedded life lesson, and a recent trip I took to Hawai'i.
The main character is named after my partner, Melissa. The name comes from the Greek word μέλισσα (mélissa) which translates to "bee", which in turn comes from the Greek word μέλι (meli), which translates to "honey."
The name Kalai'o is fictional, but inspired by names I heard across Hawai'i. I love the simplicity of their alphabet and their use of apostrophes in names.
