"Fear is only as deep as the mind allows" ~Japanese proverb

They were just kids.

But they were all broken in some way; every one of them. The world seemed vast and endless in their eyes and some didn't believe they'd make it to the end, or, at least, not a fulfilling end.

The only thing that kept them going was the instinct of self-preservation and the knowledge that, one day, they'd escape this hellish town, or maybe just escape it all.

But this wasn't until one night. When the night was filled with the bumping of speakers and the neon lights from a disco ball, imprinting something dark deep into their mind and soul.

The majority of the six kids barely knew one another, no matter how close they seemed in the eyes of everyone else. So, at a back-to-school party, where highschoolers drank illegally and danced like it was their last night, they find their world shifting off its axis and see themselves turning to one another in a moment of panic.

When each one kid made their way to the house that night, they didn't know it'd be the last night, for some.

When a crisis hits, they find it hard to keep on their feet, stumbling in the dark, searching for someone to trust, just so they wouldn't be alone. Paranoid that the other would let something slip past their lips and put them all in danger.

They find themselves getting closer in order to keep an eye on the other. The fear pulls them in on themselves but also has them reaching out in order to keep from the everlasting darkness.

Can they find salvation? Security?

Or will the fear simply become too much?

Ariella's biggest desire in life has always been such a simple one. She wants to be 'normal.' Unfortunately, that one simple wish has never been within her grasp. Coming from a long line of witches is bad enough, but she's even more different than the rest of her family. The fact that no one will give her any answers to why she's so different doesn't help matters. Her entire existence is shrouded in secrets that everyone around her refuses to reveal. After a family tragedy, she moves to a new town, and she gets her first chance to at least pretend to be 'normal.' For the first time, she's allowed to leave the house and go to an actual school. She makes friends, and she develops her first crush, that's quickly followed by her second. She's finally living the normal teenage life she'd dreamed of, but it doesn't last. Everything she believed about herself and the world around her is changed in an instant. Family secrets come to light one after another, turning her entire world upside down in the process. She quickly realizes that sometimes ignorance really is bliss, and maybe she didn't really want to know the answers to the questions she'd always asked, especially when one of these truths causes people close to her to turn their backs on her without hesitation. Before she can even recover from the shock, she's thrust into a war that she hadn't even known existed. Loyalties will be tested. She'll have to choose sides between all of the people she's come to care about. Will she stand with her family, her new friends, or the two boys who both hold a piece of her heart? One thing is for sure. She'll have to let go of her dream of 'normal.'

It started on a Monday. I don't know what happened after that. I started off normal. I was still normal, wasn't I? I don't know, I just don't know. I was happy, I should be happy, but I'm not. Maybe I am? It's like there's a blackness in my mind, and I've covered it with yellow. I hate the colour yellow, but it's what I am. It's all I am now. My friends were laughing, I was laughing, but it didn't feel like it. My face felt tight as I stretched into a smile, yet it fooled them. I shouted with them, tears coming to my eyes. They laughed harder at that, everyone crying out my name, pointing at me, tears coming to their own eyes. The hole in my heart widened. I didn't know whether they were tears of sadness or happiness. Everyone was rocking back and forth, and slowly, they seemed to form into looming monsters, with wide eyes and pale faces. We stood up, hearing the bell. The sun hurt my eyes. I ran after them, shouting with them. I was loud, too loud. My own voice hurt my head. I didn't want the attention on me, so I dragged it to my fake self; my mask. I hated myself, and what I was doing. I had walked off again. I'm not sure why, but as I blinked, my feet decided that we were not going that way. I ignored them, and they thought it was a joke. They screamed my name, startling me, making me sprint over to them. I hadn't realised how far I had really wondered off. I joined my group, only to wish I had kept walking. They were laughing again, their laughter hurting my head. It shattered my thoughts, echoed around my head, deafened any emotions. I shrieked with them. We were like monkeys, chattering together. Maybe not; we were too dangerous for that. Monsters. Pale, looming monsters. (Updates everyday day!!!) (Oh, and the picture on the title page doesn't belong to me!!!
