Anne and Des Styles are rebuilding their troubled marriage. Anne had a drinking problem, but is in therapy and is doing well. She has been sober for one year. The couple decide to adopt a child. When they meet the twelve-year-old Russian boy, Harry, at the St. Marina Orphanage, they immediately fall in love with the well-educated orphan. He seems downright Heaven-sent. Their young daughter, Gemma, is hostile to her new brother; but their deaf son, little Marcel, is enchanted with him - at first. Eventually, Anne begins to feel that Harry is manipulative and possibly even psychologically disturbed. Des refuses to listen to his wife's misgivings, and the wounds in their marriage reopen. Anne calls Sister Abigail at the orphanage, and the nun informs her that Harry has a troubled and mysterious history. Anne delves further into Harry's past and discovers that he is not an angelic little boy after all, and harbors a sinister secret. The little boy's halo was looking downright crooked.
