Euphemia Vandeleur has never had to wait in line for anything-until a five-foot street-food vendor tells her to wait her turn. Hungry after leaving a fancy event, she stops by a small cart near campus and meets Carmelita Amor Pinili, a working scholar who is not impressed by her surname, her money, or her attitude.
