After witnessing the brutal murder of her father and kidnapping of her mother, X'safia Jones finds herself struggling to finish her high school career as Valedictorian as she takes on the role of caregiver to her much younger sister, Valentine. Her boyfriend Taylin, a Salutatorian with plans to attend Harvard, does his best to help her not only emotionally but also financially, despite her refusal as the pride her father raised her with wouldn't allow the help. Looking for any way she can to ensure her sister grows up better than her, she dives under the radar of the government. Faking documents and playing the role as a teen mom, jumping from job to job, and renting out a place to live in under a fake name with the help of a friend. With fear silencing her, she manages to stay hidden from the threat of the government discovering her wrong-doings. But an inappropriate encounter with an older relative pushes her to seek justice for her father and petition for the safe return of her mother. The ones that killed her father don't take a liking to her publicity, making her their next target, causing Taylin to cut all contact. As threats are sent and danger nears, with no one to run to she is forced to nearly drop out of school and seek help from the government. The same government could care less about a black life. The one that ignored her mother's plea for help and brushed off her fathers death. The same one that can take her sister and leave her to rot, forgotten in their system. Just to live day to day, her and her sister, she almost sacrifices what she's living for to honor what her parents lived for. But everything takes a turn when she meets Dmarcus, who happens to be the most feared yet influential gang member in the area. But with his title comes more dangers. X'safia is then thrown farther into the mix of mind vs heart, finding herself getting to trouble of new lengths. And only the strongest survive.
