James Montegomery had a great life, a wonderful husband and a beautiful baby boy. But after James and Stan had Gabriel, Stan changed. He became violent, he told James Gabriel was an abomination and that he never wanted kids. He took his anger out on her, he would beat her constantly. Until one night James gets the last word, and stabs her husband to make him stop beating her. The second she's realized what she's done, she runs upstair packs two bags (one for her and one for Gabriel), takes her son and runs. She takes a bus to New Orleans and finds a place to stay and a job to bring in money. After a week of being in New Orleans she meets a new friend who used to live here but has moved back. Her name is Rebekah Mikaelson. Once the two become more aquanted, Rebekah brings James and Gabriel to meet the family. The second she met Elijah she felt a spark something that told her that he would be the one person she could trust.

She and the rest of her siblings are the Original vampires that started the supernatural line. Brook and Klaus had finally broken the curse that had been put on them over a thousand years ago, but after breaking the curse, things begin to go down hill. Her and Klaus begin to argue, though he loves her unconditionally and wants nothing but the best for her. When Elijah tries to explain to her why exactly he was willing to kill her and their brother so easily, she becomes completely enraged. Brook planned on killing the whole town, turning off her emotions and letting hell rain down on earth. She knew Klaus would be right behind her, though she also knew he may not be too pleased either. Elijah tries to apologize, telling her he realized how wrong he was and that he just wanted to be reunited with the family. She didn't want to do it for Cadance but Kol fought multiple times since I was his wife; then finally she gave in and did the spell for me to... but there was a catch to this spell.
