Artemis has always been drawn to the mysterious sounds of howling in the northern woods near her home. One night, a particularly pained howl stirs her curiosity, and she witnesses a strange confrontation between two shadowy figures in her backyard under the moonlight.
The next morning, Artemis awakes with strange marks on her skin and aches in her bones. As she prepares for work, she receives a reminder that it's her mother's birthday - a painful reminder of her recent passing. Distraught, Artemis leaves early but becomes distracted by tears on the road. When something darts in front of her car, she swerves to avoid impact and crashes her vehicle in the process.
