Hidden away in a crumbling kingdom, Calum burns for the life he should have had. The Black Hunt, however cruel and unforgiving, is his only home. Their job? To track down diseased monsters known only as "deadwings" in exchange for riches and arcane secrets from the neighboring welfling colony, who struck up the deal out of desperation to save whatever citizens hadn't already succumbed to the curse. It was simple, Kill the deadwings, eradicate the disease, save the world.

At least it was simple until Calum met one.

It's been five years since the plague struck. Leah knows there are other survivors, but she's avoiding them. She is doing just fine on her own. Surviving after everyone she knew died has made her physically strong and honed her intelligence, but she is emotionally devastated. There is nothing to fear if you don't make yourself emotionally vulnerable. James has spent the last five years helping to build up a colony of survivors. He believes in the small town they have populated and its mission to save humanity from extinction. He and his small team of men find scattered people and bring them in. Over the last two centuries, women have fought for and won more and more rights, gaining equality with men. Society, law, and technology bolsters and enforces these rights, but now they are gone. Women's equality with men is over. There are just too few of them. They aren't lesser but greater, more important, more valuable than men. Men are expendable. Men can stay outside alone if they like, but all women must be brought inside the safety of the Colony and properly taken care of. James has been searching the area Leah lives in. Her time of solitude is up. Leah sparks something in James he's never felt before. He's not letting this one get away, certainly not twice. Many challenges that are hard to overcome are always thrown at him. He has no idea about the terror and destruction happening in another world, his parent's world. The school he, his daughter, and his new friends are going to, has been invaded by a dark dog made of shadows. He didn't know this was his calling until a man named Lucas came to take him away. His friends argue saying they should go too. The strange man has to agree. When still in the human world, Hunter is shot with a poisonous arrow that has been banned for centuries. But there is only one person that can save him. But would they get there in time? Would he make it to the healer? Would his uncle take over before he can heal? If he makes it?
