The people, food and places he sees are countless and the details are given in great detail both from James's point of view but the people and locals he interacts with along the way.
The company that hired him have provided all the necessities for the trip so survival will not be one of the challenges. The challenge is actually for him to get there with the cargo within a certain time frame. The have not told him what the cargo is and he does not know that this trip is a test that will either set him up for a life of health, wealth and happiness or hopelessness and death.
