The Serpentine War ends in tragedy; most of the next generation of Elemental Masters orphaned, their parents ripped away from them. Some were lucky enough to be taken up by a wise man and his wife or other families. 
But there's more to the story than a few fluff moments and it's up to Zane, Kai, Cole, Jay, Nya and Lloyd to figure out what in the FSM is going on‽
