The true story of the adventures of a Scottish barrel-maker, Allan Pinkerton, who fled Glasgow in Scotland when chased by police for being an active Chartist and together with his new wife Joan Carfrae was shipwrecked on the shores of America, attacked by Indians, and started a business of Coopering with one silver dollar and went on to be successful. However, he began a new career as a detective and eventually formed the Pinkerton Detective agency and the first Secret Service in America, during the American Civil War,which was the fore-runner of the F.B.I. He personally assisted President Abraham Lincoln in the bloody years of the Civil War and after the war took on the famous bad men who were mostly the result of the conflict, and ruled the Wild West. His personal battles were also with the notorious killer Jesse James. An exciting story which you will have a job to put down!

Beneath bitter skies, redemption rides with the restless. ----------------------------------- 1863 Fresh from the war and nursing a wound that won't heal, Jesse Dunning rides home to Texas - only to find his town burned to cinders and his family gone. His mother's grave is fresh, his brother Cole's is missing, and that's enough to send Jesse back into the wild with nothing but a horse, a bad shoulder, and a promise. When a fever nearly kills him in a border town, he's saved by Emmaline McGraw - a sharp-tongued, soft-hearted woman with her own ghosts and a brother out west. Together, they set out across a country, still bleeding from war, chasing rumors, wagon trails, and hope through dust and danger. From the ashes of Texas to the mountains of Oregon, Jesse's search for his brother becomes something more - a fight to outrun his past, a test of the man he's becoming, and a reckoning with the love he swore he'd never want again. Under bitter skies, every mile brings him closer to the truth: some things lost can still be found - if a man's willing to bleed for them.
